Race Matters
Institute

Advancing racial equity with solid data, comprehensive strategies, and knowledge of national and local settings.

The Race Matters Institute works toward a more just and vibrant nation where every child, family and community thrives. For more than a decade, RMI has helped government units, nonprofits, community-based and regional organizations, philanthropies, and state and national networks become more race-informed and equity-focused in their work.

Through customized training, technical assistance, coaching, and product development, we advance concrete actions in both operations and programming that strengthen an organization’s mission performance.

Therefore, our focus differs from, yet complements, the work of allies in the field of racial equity who offer strategies for personal and interpersonal change, as well as work toward organizational diversity and inclusion.

We work to build organizational capacities around Five Key Building Blocks to Advance Racial Equity:

  1. 1

A shared language around racial equity for productive discussion.

  2. 2

Disaggregated data to understand how different groups are differently positioned.

  3. 3

A structural analysis (including an historical understanding) to identify barriers to equitable outcomes and devise strategies accordingly.

  4. 4

Systematic use of a Racial Equity Impact Analysis for key decisions, policies, and practices.

  5. 5

Effective communication about race and racism.

Our support is anchored in a client’s optimal mission performance and attentive to their needs, circumstances, and pacing. This means that we:

  • Highlight and build on client strengths as well as address their needs for being a fully race-informed organization.

  • Listen to clients in order to co-design the specific services to be offered.

  • Use evaluation forms and debrief following each step to incorporate real-time feedback into subsequent work.

  • Promise a productive relationship with no surprises!
