One Year After Hurricane Helene: Calling for a Just Recovery

September 27, 2025, marks one year since Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina. For thousands of families, the storm’s impact continues to shape daily life. Housing insecurity, economic uncertainty, and the slow pace of rebuilding have left too many survivors without the stability and support they need to move forward.

As the NC Inclusive Disaster Recovery Network (NCIDR)—a collaborative of public, nonprofit, faith-based, and community organizations facilitated by MDC—we know that recovery is not a short-term project. It requires long-term, coordinated investment from state and federal partners, informed by the experiences of those most affected.

This anniversary week, September 21–27, NCIDR members are sharing stories, perspectives, and calls to action from across the state. From housing to disability rights, small business recovery to resilience planning, these voices highlight both the ongoing needs and the opportunities to build a stronger, more just North Carolina.

Our message is clear:
• Recovery isn’t over until it reaches everyone.
• Philanthropy and volunteerism are essential, but cannot replace public responsibility.
• Equity must be at the heart of every recovery decision, ensuring no community is left behind.
